How to Order

All Ranger II’s require more than one segment to complete a spacer. In addition, all Ranger II’s are available with a number of different runner height options which are used to guarantee clearance of the mechanical joint, provide for options in carrier pipe positioning within the casing or to compensate for grade elevation adjustments. Following are examples on how to size Ranger II spacers for various applications.

Example 1
Installation with Equal Length Runners - Maximum Allowable Height

20” Ductile Iron pipe (21.60” O.D. barrel & 28.63” O.D. bell) inside a 36” casing with a 0.375” wall thickness.

A. Find carrier pipe O.D. (21.60”) from chart and choose the proper size and number of segments. One spacer would require 5 - Maxi segments.
B. Determine maximum runner height with equal length runners.

Casing I.D.

35.25”

Less Carrier Pipe O.D.

-21.60”

13.65"

Less Space Allowance

-1.00”

12.65"

Divide this number (12.65”) by 2 to obtain the total allowable runner height = 6.325”
C. Choose a runner height of this value or less.

Solution: 5 - Maxi segments with runner heights of 5.91”.

Note: This combination will also restrain the pipe from flotation within the casing pipe by allowing only about 1.8” of clearance between the top runners and the casing I.D.

Example 2 - Carrier Pipe Installed Just To Clear the Bell.

Suggested minimum clearance is at least 1” (1/2” on both sides)

20” Ductile Iron pipe (21.60” O.D. barrel & 28.63” O.D. bell) inside a 36” casing with a 0.375” wall thickness.

A. Find carrier pipe O.D. from chart (21.60”) and choose the proper size and number of segments.
One spacer would require 5 - Maxi segments.
B. Determine runner height.

Bell O.D.

28.63”

Add 1” Clearance

+1.00”

29.63”

Less Barrel O.D.

-21.60”

8.03”

Divide this number (8.03”) by 2 to obtain the minimum runner height to just clear the bell = 4.01”
C. Choose a runner height between 4.01” and the maximum allowable runner height (6.32”) determined in Example 1.

Solution: 5 - Maxi segments with runner heights of 4.92”.

Example 3 - Carrier Pipe Centered in Casing (within approximately 1/2” of casing center)

Casing I.D. (35.25”) divided by 2

17.625”

Less Carrier Barrel O.D. (21.60”) divided by 2

-10.80”

6.82”

Choose a runner height closest to this value (6.82”). On the chart a 6.89” runner would be closest, however 6.88” is larger than the maximum allowable runner height as determined in Example 1.
In this case, use 6.88” runners on the bottom to center the carrier pipe approximately and adjust the top runner heights to allow insertion within the casing. Use the following procedure to determine max. height for top runners:

Casing I.D.

35.25”

Less Space Allowance

-1.00”

Less Carrier Pipe Barrel O.D.

-21.60”

Less Bottom Runner Height

-6.88”

Desirable Top Runner Height

5.77”

Select the closest runner height from the chart less than (5.77”). In this case a 4.92” runner height would be specified for the top runners. Also verify this is of sufficient height to clear the bell (4.01”) which in this case it is.

Solution: 2 - Maxi segments with runner heights of 6.89” and 3 Maxi segments with runner heights of 4.92”.

Example 4 - Ranger II used to Adjust for Grade Elevation Changes

Within a “segment size” various height runners may be used to adjust for grade elevations. In the above example a 20” Ductile Iron pipe with a 21.60” O.D. will require 5 Maxi segments to make a complete casing spacer. One could use any combination of Maxi segments with runners between the Minimum Allowable Runner Height of 4.01” and the Maximum Allowable Runner Height of 6.32” to position the carrier pipe at a particular height. Any other combination of runner heights of Maxi segments that fall between these values may be used, although no more than half of the segments should consist of the higher runner height segments.
